The Virgin Islands Democratic Primary elections of 2014 have yet to be certified because the counting is still ongoing in both Districts, V.I. Elections Supervisor Caroline Fawkes said on Tuesday.
Even as counting continued late into Tuesday, Fawkes said that the counting would not be completed until Wednesday — or even later down in the week.
The Board of Elections also decided not to reveal the amount of walk-in, provisional and mail-in ballots that they had received, although some of the St. Thomian Senate candidates’ fate hangs on the outcome of the final tally.
The Board of Elections can take its time because it has until August 17th to finalize the results, however the long wait has caused some to question the methods through which elections vote-counting are carried out in the Virgin Islands, and many have called for reform.
As of Tuesday, the St. Croix District had 388 walk-in ballots and 120 of the 129 mail-ins that were sent out had been returned. Tuesday was also the deadline to receive mail-ins, which had to be postmarked August 2nd in order to qualify.
The amount of walk-ins in the St. Thomas-St. John District totaled 797, while 57 provisional ballots were received. In the provisional count, six were disqualified and one had no vote, reducing the provisional ballot count to 50.
