The territory is expected to see thunderstorm activity Saturday and Sunday, with 1 to 2 inches of rainfall along with isolated areas of up to 4 inches forecast for the northern Virgin Islands. One to 2 inches of rainfall is forecast for St. Croix, according to the National Weather Service.
Additionally, Hurricane Lorenzo is forecast to bring an easterly swell across the local Atlantic waters by Saturday, resulting in choppy marine conditions offshore. A moderate risk of rip currents will prevail for some of the north and southern beaches Saturday and Sunday.
Today and Tonight
According to the National Weather Service, light southerly winds will result in above normal heat index between 102-107 degrees across portions of St. Croix. Everyone should take steps to prevent heat-related illnesses, injuries, and deaths during hot weather, according to VITEMA:
- Stay in an air-conditioned indoor location as much as possible.
- Drink plenty of fluids even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Avoid getting sunburn. Use sunscreen and wear a hat if working outside.
- Never leave children or pets in cars.
- Be alert to signs of heat-related illness. Know what to look for and check on others that might be at high risk (see attachments).
