ST. THOMAS — A man named Kareem Joseph, seen above, who police say assaulted another man during a verbal altercation in the vicinity of Lindberg Bay on January 16, 2018, was arrested in San Bernardino County, California on September 10 facilitated by the National Crime Information Center, an electronic clearinghouse of crime data that can be tapped into by virtually every criminal justice agency nationwide, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The database helps criminal justice professionals apprehend fugitives, locate missing persons, recover stolen property, and identify terrorists. It also assists law enforcement officers in performing their duties more safely and provides information necessary to protect the public.
According to V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte, police responded to the Jan. 16 2018 assault at about 9:55 p.m., after the 911 emergency call center was notified of the incident.
Upon arrival, contact was made with the male victim, who told police he was assaulted by Mr. Joseph, 38, during a verbal altercation where the victim said he sustained severe head injuries.
According to Mr. Dratte, following an investigation an arrest warrant was issued for Mr. Joseph, but the suspect — upon learning of his wanted status — left the territory.
However on Sept. 10, information about Mr. Joseph’s arrest was placed into the NCIC database by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office.
The suspect was held at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, California until he was picked up by two detectives from the Warrant Unit of the Virgin Islands Police Department and was brought back to St. Thomas, according to Mr. Dratte.
Mr. Joseph was arrested and charged with using a dangerous weapon during a commission of a crime, first-degree assault, third-degree assault, mayhem, retaliating or threatening a witness among other charges.
Unable to make bail of $100,000, Mr. Joseph was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advisement hearing.
