Despite a sluggish start to the new school year, the Virgin Islands Department of Education has received a windfall of $745,384 in U.S. Department of Education funds to help improve student behavior and their learning conditions.
In a statement released by Delegate to Congress Donna M. Christensen’s office on Monday, the funding is said to be part of the Fiscal Year 2014 New Awards for the School Climate Transformation Grant- Local Educational Agency Grants Program, which is among several programs designed to bolster school safety initiatives, as well as provide improved mental health services for students and young adults.
The program was first introduced in President Barack Obama’s 2013 “Now is the Time” comprehensive plan. Its goal is to provide competitive grants to local educational agencies (LEAs) to develop, improve, or increase support systems and technical assistance to schools that offer an “evidence-based, multi-tiered framework” for transforming “behavioral outcomes and learning conditions for students.”
The U.S. Departments of Education, Health and Human Services and Justice will implement coordinated programs in line with the initiative and the FY 2014 Consolidated Appropriations Act.
