A St. Thomas police officer who was arrested and charged with Simple Assault and Battery, Domestic Violence and Disturbance of the Peace, was released after he posted bail of $500, police spokesperson Melody Rames said.
Derick Greaves, a 23-year veteran of the Virgin Islands Police Department assigned to the Executive Security Unit in the St. Thomas/St. John District, was arrested on Monday, October 13 at approximately 10:30 a.m. Greaves’ rights hearing was set for Tuesday.
In response to the incident, Police Commissioner Rodney F. Querrard, Sr. condemned the violence and stressed that those who have sworn to uphold the law should be held to a higher standard, adding that, “We cannot enforce the laws and break them also.”
“The Police Department is once again stigmatized by yet another arrest of one their own,” Querrard lamented. “Any officer found to be in violation of any law will be held accountable like any other citizen in the community.”
He added: “Peace Officers, no matter the agency assigned, should, and must be held to a higher standard if probable cause for an arrest is found for any violation of the law. We cannot enforce the laws, and also break them. That is not being a part of the solution. That is being a part of the problem.”
Querrard ended his statement by saying everyone is innocent until proven guilty, therefore “the same goes for any Peace Officer arrested based on probable cause.”
