The Division of Personnel has scheduled territory-wide police and corrections officer entrance examinations for the week of December 1-5. However, interested candidates must first submit an application package now through Oct. 31 in order to sit the exam. The announcement came yesterday from Director of Personnel, Kenneth L. Hermon, Jr.
The following requirements must be met by those interested in taking the exam:
- Have an accredited high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma
- Show proof of US citizenship
- Be at least (20) years of age with no criminal record
- Have a valid driver’s license or be able to qualify for a motor vehicle operator’s license
Hermon said candidates who meet the initial requirements stated above are then required to visit the Division of Personnel to confirm interest, verification and distribution of preparation manual (police only) by the established deadline date. A preparation manual for the police examination will be distributed to candidates the same day the entire package is received by the Division of Personnel and the candidate is deemed eligible.
Interested candidates must sign up and submit a completed application package at the Division of Personnel from Mon., Oct. 20 – Fri., Oct. 31, between the hours of 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. Applications are available at the Division of Personnel, GERS Complex, 3rd floor, Kronprindsens Gade, St. Thomas or at 3009 Orange Grove Shopping Center, Bays #6,7,8, Christiansted, St. Croix. Applications may also be downloaded from the Personnel website at www.dopusvi.org.
The Division’s recruitment policy has been updated to include new criteria that allow candidates to be waived from sitting the written examination; however, candidates are required to meet all other established criteria for qualification. The new criteria are as follows:
- All degrees (associate, bachelor and master level) from accredited institutions will now be accepted in addition to the degrees currently accepted, which include police science, criminal justice, (certain) social science, criminology, forensic science, accounting, public and business administration; however, all accredited non-related degrees will require proof of completion via official transcript.; and
- All military veterans who served full military service with an honorable or general discharge listed on their DD214.
