V.I. Disability Rights Center To Stage Exhibit At Agriculture Fair

Health / News / Virgin Islands / February 11, 2015

The Disability Rights Center of the Virgin Islands (DRCVI) will feature an exhibit of prominent Virgin Islanders with disabilities at the Agricultural and Food Fair on St. Croix, Feb. 14-16.

Described as “informative, colorful and artistically rendered,” the exhibit will showcase pictures on large canvasses of residents who have been on the forefront of disability rights, including Julia Lopez, community activist; and Colonel Ben Mitchell of the V.I. National Guard, and others.

In addition, DRCVI representatives will be canvassing the fairgrounds to learn how the organization can better serve the disabled community.

“We want to know how we can better service and prioritize our work with the disability community,” said Executive Director Amelia Headley-Lamont. “It’s important to me and our staff that we hear from you during those days at the Agriculture Fair, because it’s one of the best ways that we can learn how our work can impact the lives of persons with disabilities in a positive way.”

Headley-Lamont said a questionnaire will be available for fair attendees to fill out.

“We are asking the community to please see our beautiful exhibition and at that time fill out our questionnaire,” she said. “It takes about one minute to fill out the questionnaire, and that minute of your time will make a huge difference in how we prioritize our cases.”

Headley-Lamont expressed her excitement about the first-time effort of her organization.

“We are very much involved in working with parents whose children have disabilities,” she said. “This is why I am so excited about this year’s exhibition. It’s our first and we hope to continue to include more diversity and more local families in next year’s exhibit.

“The more we see our faces the more we can relate, support each other, and make a difference,” she said.
