Virgin Islands Energy Office Offering Savings On LED Light Bulbs

News / Virgin Islands / April 13, 2015

ST. CROIX — Residential and small business customers can purchase Energy Star LED light bulbs through Virgin Islands Energy Office-approved vendors at significant savings through Sept. 15 or as long as supplies last, according to a VIEO press release.

To be eligible for the rebate program – which offers up to 30 percent off LED light bulbs at the point of sale – residential and small business customers must consume up to 1200 kilowatt hours per month of electricity.

The Energy Office said the purpose of the program is sixfold: 1) to provide an affordable option for homeowners and small businesses that want to purchase LED bulbs, 2) to promote LED technology, 3) to reduce the territory’s carbon footprint, 4) to reduce fossil fuel dependence, 5) to adhere to the government’s goal to reduce energy consumption by 60 percent by 2025 and 6) to reduce per capita energy consumption to the EPACT goal of 835 MBTUs/person.

LED bulbs use 20 to 25 less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and last 25 times as long, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. The LEDs have advantages over compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) because they do not contain mercury and aren’t as fragile.

The LED bulbs are currently available at Quality Electric on St. Croix and Sun Blaze VI, LLC in St. Thomas. Vendors wishing to participate in the program should contact the Energy Office at 713-8436 x3603

Correction: April 14

A previous version of this story stated that the Virgin Islands Energy Office’s rebate program would only apply to residents who’ve consumed at least 1200 kilowatt hours per month. The VIEO contacted VI Consortium with new information making known that residents who consume up to 1200 kilowatt hours per month would be eligible, which is an important distinction. The story has been updated as such.
