ST. THOMAS — Governor Kenneth Mapp said his administration, in the next ten days, will release $5 million in tax refund checks to residents of the territory.
The announcement came at a press conference held at Government House in St. Thomas on Thursday, where the governor addressed the 31st Legislature’s decision to vote down 11 of his cabinet nominees. They were immediately reinstated as acting directors and commissioners of their respective offices by the govenor.
While talking about his administration’s accomplishments so far, Mapp revealed that they’ve paid $12.5 million in tax refunds to the public in the last four months.
But there’s more to come.
“Currently at the Department of Finance, the department is processing an additional $5 million to release to the public over the course of the next ten days,” he added.
The governor is keeping a promise he made to accelerate the tax refund process in the territory. Last week, some residents revealed to VI Consortium that they’d received 2013 tax refund checks, including one who received a $5964.20 refund.
“We said to the community as we said to the Legislature, that we began issuing tax refunds at a rate of $750,000 a month; we were able to go to $1 million a month; [then] $1.5 million; and that our target is to arrive at $4.2 million.
“So in four months we have gone from no tax refunds to the people of the territory, to, in the next ten days, $17.8 million,” the chief executive said.
