Waste Management Closing Smith Bay Bin Site Today

News / Virgin Islands / June 19, 2015

ST. THOMAS — The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) announced via press release that on Friday, the Smith Bay public bin site will be closed to facilitate the completion of the curbside construction project by the Margaritaville Vacation Club.

The currently placed 20-yard bins, located along the Smith Bay roadside, could not be relocated to a location within the Smith Bay area that would be suitable and safe for residents, according to the release. Consequently, VIWMA will be placing smaller 6-yard bins in various locations within the Smith Bay community for residents who currently do not receive weekly curbside collection.

These smaller units, exclusive to Smith Bay residents for household waste disposal, will be placed within the next two weeks as VIWMA prepares the identified sites for use.

Two additional 20-yard bins will be placed at the bin site located in Estate Nazareth, south of the Ivanna Eudora Kean High School, to accommodate additional waste from neighboring residents.

East End residents are asked to utilize alternate bin sites or to take their waste directly to the Bovoni Landfill. Businesses are reminded that it is against the law to dispose of any commercial waste in residential disposal sites.

Residents are also asked to reduce the amount waste being disposed of by reuse and recycling practices and to flatten such items, such as cardboard boxes, prior to disposal.

VIWMA says it’s against the law to dispose of bulk waste items such as furniture and bedding, and white goods such as appliances, at the bin sites.

These items should be taken directly to the Bovoni Landfill, according to VIWMA.

Residents or businesses found illegally disposing unacceptable items will be ticketed. Illegal disposal of waste is a criminal offense which carries a citation of $1,000.

Persons found guilty of the territory’s litter laws can be cited a $1,000 fine and/or imprisoned for up to 180 days.
