ST. CROIX — The VI Waste Management Authority said via press release on Wednesday that the St. Croix Transfer Station would remain closed until Friday, as the authority addresses the backlog of waste that has been building up since employees of W.M.A. contractor Sanitas Partners, LLC, staged a protest on Tuesday.
According to the release, the authority’s senior management team met on Wednesday with Sanitas Partners, and as a result of the discussions, Sanitas employees were expected to return to the job site on Thursday to resume the processing of waste and to address the backlog at the facility.
The release also revealed that Governor Kenneth Mapp had approved a short-term working capital loan of $750,000 from the Public Finance Authority (P.F.A.) to assist W.M.A. in paying its vendors at least part of the monies owed. W.M.A. is currently finalizing documents required for the P.F.A. loan, the release added.
Residents are asked to use existing bin sites for waste disposal and haulers are advised that the facility will not be accepting incoming waste until Friday.
Waste Management apologized for the inconvenience.
