ST. THOMAS — Police have announced the arrest of 25-year-old Christian J. Rojas, one of the two men who robbed and shot the owner of Savan Grocery twice after he refused to give money, VIPD Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson announced on Sunday. It remains unclear as to which suspect, if not both men, shot the victim. The arrest was made last Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
According to the report, on Saturday at roughly 10:35 am, the owner of the Savan Grocery Store phoned the 911 emergency call center and reported that one of the suspects who had robbed his business on Friday, June 19, 2015 , was standing outside the store.
The victim of the robbery was able to positively identify Rojas, a resident of Lytton Fancy, as one of the suspects who was involved in the robbery of his business in addition to having assaulted him.
Several officers responded to the notification and as they arrived on the scene attempting to apprehend the suspect, Rojas physically assaulted an officer and began to run away on foot. He was apprehended moments later in the alley near the Leonard Dober Elementary School.
Rojas was then transported to the Criminal Investigation Bureau where he was arrested and charged with first degree robbery, third degree assault, aggravated assault, and simple possession of a controlled substance.
Unable to make bail of $100,000, he was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advise-of-rights hearing.
Correction: August 3, 2015
An earlier version of this story, in quoting a previous report from Crime Stoppers USVI, incorrectly stated that the man who shot the Savan Grocery Store owner was Rojas. However, while Rojas has been identified as one of the two suspects who robbed the store on June 19, it remains unclear as to which of the two men shot the store owner, if not both. The story has been updated to reflect the correction information.
