The University of the Virgin Islands is monitoring the weather as Hurricane Danny approaches the Virgin Islands, according to a press release the institution issued this afternoon.
According to the National Hurricane Center’s 2 p.m. advisory, Hurricane Danny is now a category three hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. The maximum winds are estimated to be 115 miles per hour with higher gusts. No additional intensification is expected, as Danny is moving into an area of unfavorable upper-level winds, and a weakening trend is expected to begin later today.
There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect. However, the National Hurricane Center has begun advising interests in the Leeward Islands – the northern islands of the Lesser Antilles chain from Puerto Rico southward to Dominica – to monitor the progress of Danny.
