UVI Monitoring Approach Of Danny; Classes And Offices Expected To Open On Monday

News / Virgin Islands / August 21, 2015

The University of the Virgin Islands is monitoring the weather as Hurricane Danny approaches the Virgin Islands, according to a press release the institution issued this afternoon.

According to the National Hurricane Center’s 2 p.m. advisory, Hurricane Danny is now a category three hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. The maximum winds are estimated to be 115 miles per hour with higher gusts. No additional intensification is expected, as Danny is moving into an area of unfavorable upper-level winds, and a weakening trend is expected to begin later today.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect. However, the National Hurricane Center has begun advising interests in the Leeward Islands – the northern islands of the Lesser Antilles chain from Puerto Rico southward to Dominica – to monitor the progress of Danny.

UVI is expected to open on Monday, Aug. 24, for normal hours of operations. The UVI Community is asked to be vigilant and monitor all forms of communication. UVI status updates will be available in the Current Students, Current Employees and News sections of the UVI website www.uvi.edu. Status updates will also be available on social media: www.facebook.com/uvi.edu and twitter.com/uvi_edu; and campus hotlines: (340) 692-4168 and (340) 693-1016.

Information on steps to prepare for inclement weather can be found on UVI’s Emergency Preparedness webpage via this direct link: Emergency Preparedness. All UVI students and employees are encouraged to sign-up for UVI’s Rave emergency notification system, which is used to share critical information via text messages and e-mail. Participants simply add their cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses to the “Personal Information” page in UVI’s BanWeb accounts. Additional instructions on signing up for Rave are available from this direct link.
