Sen. Nelson Seeking Bikers, Youth Groups, Frats, Sororities, Bands And More For Nov. 7 Peace Concert

News / Virgin Islands / October 16, 2015

ST. CROIX — Senator Terrence Positive Nelson is looking to make the peace concert and rally that his office is planning one that will leave a lasting mark on this island.

As made known by a press release Nelson issued on Thursday, the senator is welcoming participation from poets, bikers/automobile groups, bands, sororities/fraternities, youth organizations and entities providing youth services, organizations that provide counseling services and “anyone else who feels they can contribute to the event,” planned for November 7 at the Agricultural Fair Grounds from 2:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.

Nelson’s first effort was a memorial service held at the Island Center here on October 10. He said the purpose of the event was to “memorialize those who have been murdered and give support to the families of the victims and perpetrators.”

The upcoming occasion, however, aims to make a more forceful point by gathering various segments of the community in a show of unified support against criminal activity on this island. And it comes at a time when violence has seen no pause in the territory. Just Saturday, October 3, a man was shot dead in Mount Pleasant-West, while shots were fired at another man on the same day as he walked out of the Walter IM Hodge Pavilion in Frederiksted. He was treated at the Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center for a gunshot wound and released.

Meanwhile, a man was shot in the vicinity of the Frydenhoj ballpark on Monday, October 5 at about 6:13 p.m. in St. Thomas, as violence in the territory’s capital has also remained steady.

A planning meeting will be held on October 21 at Senate President Neville James’ office at the Frederiksted Legislative Building, according to the release. Interesting persons are asked to call 340-712-2210 to speak with Sonia Andrew or Nykole Tyson for more information.

I wear many hats, I suppose, but the one which fits me best would be journalism, second to that would be radio personality, thirdly singer/songwriter and down the line. I've been the Editor-In-Chief at my videogames website, Gamesthirst, for over 5 years, writing over 7,000 articles and more than 2 million words. I'm also very passionate about where I live, the United States Virgin Islands, and I'm intent on making it a better place by being resourceful and keeping our leaders honest. VI Consortium was birthed out of said desire, hopefully my efforts bear fruit. Reach me at [email protected].
