17-Year-Old Shot Dead In Whim While Riding Bicycle; Homicide Count Up To 3 On St. Croix On 8th Day Of 2019

Breaking News / News / Virgin Islands / January 8, 2019

ST. CROIX — Three people have died through gun violence on St. Croix just eight days into 2019. The latest incident involved a young man, age 17, who was riding a bicycle in Estate Whim, when he was gunned down by unknown assailants, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte has confirmed to The Consortium.

The call came in to the 911 emergency call center at about 10:46 a.m., Mr. Dratte said. Residents in the neighborhood said they heard what sounded like gunshots and a vehicle moving at a high rate of speed.

Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene and upon their arrival, met a young man lying on the ground on his back, with his feet still on the pedal of the bicycle. He had no vital signs, police say.

At 12:45 p.m. today, officers were still on the scene and had erected a small, square-shaped fence made out of tarpaulin and wood to cover the victim’s body. The victim’s name was being withheld pending next of kin notification.

Mr. Dratte said the matter remains under active investigation. He also called on anyone with information about the homicide to contact the V.I.P.D. at 340-778-2211, or Crime Stoppers USVI with an anonymous tip here.
