Governor Kenneth Mapp has signed a proclamation in honor of D. Hamilton Jackson Day, also known as “Liberty Day” or “Bull and Bread Day”, making Monday, November 2 the official day the holiday is celebrated this year, a press release Government House issued late Saturday revealed.
The proclamation was in order, Mapp says, because the holiday, historically celebrated on November 1, falls on a Sunday. Therefore, pursuant to the Legislature’s amendment to 1 V.I.C. section 171 to provide that when a holiday falls on a Sunday, the Governor of the Virgin Islands may grant administrative leave on the following Monday in commemoration of the holiday, Mr. Mapp moved forward with the proclamation, granting administrative leave to all executive branch employees for Monday, November 2 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
“D. Hamilton Jackson Day provides the Territory with an opportunity to celebrate and honor contributions and accomplishments of this fine Virgin Islander and to preserve the history of the Virgin Islands and specifically St. Croix,” said the territory’s leader.
