ST. CROIX — An escaped inmate from the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility & Detention Center has been caught and remanded to custody says Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections officials, according to a press release BOC issued this afternoon.
According to the release, an incident report indicated that detainee Miguel Cruz went missing during a morning shift change at 6:33 a.m. Tuesday morning. By all accounts the inmate was accounted for until up to that time. A search of the detention center and general facility was made and it was determined that Cruz was not on the property.
“A combination of officers that formed our Tactical Response and Special Operation teams were assembled, on the road and able to locate and secure the detainee in approximately 30 minutes after the team left the facility,” said Mr. Mullgrav.
At approximately 10:12 a.m. Cruz was located in the area of Old Friedensburg by BOC officers. He was apprehended and returned to the confines of the Bureau of Corrections, where he was searched, assessed by the medical staff and locked down.
A determination as to how the inmate escaped has not yet been made. The incident is currently under investigation by the BOC investigative unit. In addition to his existing charge of second degree assault, Cruz will be officially charged with the escape.
Director-designee Rick Mullgrav, pleased by the swift apprehension of the escapee, offered his appreciation to the corrections personnel saying, “I would like to thank the members of the members of the Tactical Response and Special Operations teams and the entire staff for their efforts during this morning’s operation. The collaboration and expeditious actions to apprehend the escapee and ensure public safety are commendable and will be formally acknowledged.”
