Update 1: The victim has been identified as Elvis Davis.
ST. CROIX — It was the third homicide on this island in four days; and the fourth territory-wide, as the US Virgin Islands continue to experience unrelenting criminal activity this year.
Just after 1:30 p.m. today, officers responded to reports of shooting near the Ann E. Heyliger Vegetable Market in Frederiksted, situated near the Fritz Lawaetz Housing Community and just a few blocks away from the Fritz Lawaetz Legislative Building, where Senate hearings and other governmental activities are held.
The area was loaded with onlookers and law enforcement enforcers, including at least one federal agent. Family members could be seen to the south of the area grieving, while police officers continued their work of gathering evidence.
The deceased, whose identity has not been released pending next of kin notification, was covered with a white sheet, parts of it soaked with blood and his body positioned face down on the road. Asked for further details, VIPD officials directed The Consortium to the force’s PR team.

Senators Kurt Vialet and Kenneth Gittens, on the scene, could be seen speaking with officers as this latest homicide — the victim’s body on the ground while onlookers watched in dismay and disbelief — has left officials desperate for answers.
According to one resident, who was in close proximity of the homicide, around 20 shots were fired.
