ST. CROIX — Governor Kenneth Mapp hosted his first holiday party for the children of this island yesterday. The function was to be held at 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Fort Christiansvaern, but after incessant showers, organizers moved the event to the facility at the Canegata Ballpark in Gallows Bay.
The change of location, however, did not stop a great number of children showing up in great numbers. They played on the inside of the building, as well as in bounces stationed outside, and also had their faces painted. They received gifts from Governor Kenneth Mapp, who showed up later to the event, along with Lieutenant Governor Osbert Potter, 2015-16 Carnival Queen Khalifa Antoine, Santa and the Three Kings.
“We are happy to have you here,” proclaimed governor Mapp while on stage. He wished the children happy new year, thanked the parents from bringing them, and also thanked Santa Clause for showing up. The governor also joked that he was disappointed that he was heavier than the gift bearer.
“I feel bad. I cannot believe that I am bigger than Santa Clause. Santa Clause goes to weight watchers,” he joked.
Mr. Potter also chimed in: “Good evening, we have some seriously good gifts for you, so once we get started we know that you will enjoy yourself. We want to thank you for coming and your parents fro bringing you,” he told the children.
The event was attended by other Mapp administration officials as well, including St. Croix Administrator Stephanie Williams, Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency Director Mona Barnes, Territorial ADA Coordinator Jamila Russell and others.
