St. Croix Resident Commits Suicide

ST. CROIX — A resident was found dead in Estate Two Williams this afternoon, VIPD Media Specialist announced via press release.

According to the police report, at 12: 35 p.m., the 911 emergency call center received a report of a suicide that took place in a brush covered area of Estate Two Williams.

Responding officers and detectives arrived at the scene and saw the body of a Hispanic male that was hanging from a tree. An ambulance was summoned and shortly thereafter, emergency medical technicians examined the body and found no signs of life present.

The victim of the suicide has been identified as Shem Sankitts, 28, of Estate Two Williams, according to police.

According to the preliminary report, Mr. Sankitts had mental health problems and had been reported as missing on Friday, January 22, 2016. An active search was underway for the victim, whose body was found just north of his residence.

The incident is under active investigation by detectives, the release concluded.
