ST. THOMAS — By proclaiming April 17 through April 23 to be Virgin Islands Literary Festival and Literacy Celebration Week, Governor Kenneth Mapp said he “hopes to motivate the entire Virgin Islands community to embrace reading as a fundamental element of education, intellectual stimulation, and enjoyment.”
That’s according to a press release issued by Government House early Tuesday, adding that Mr. Mapp has pledged that his administration will promote every opportunity to encourage the broadest possible levels of literacy throughout the territory.
This year’s event, the second annual, features renowned author Sir Salman Rushdie, along with featured participant and New York Times bestselling author, Virgin Islander Tobias Buckell.
The Literary Festival will be held on the University of the Virgin Islands’ St. Croix campus at the Great Hall. Other highlighted guests include authors Jamaica Kincaid, Elizabeth Nunez, Sir Earl Lovelace, Kathleen Smith and Velma Pollard. There will be workshops and panel discussions, as well as book sales and signings in both Christiansted and Frederiksted.
