ST. THOMAS — Following his return to the territory from the National Lieutenant Governors Association (N.L.G.A.) 2016 Annual Meeting in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Mr. Potter revealed that the territory had been selected to host next year’s event, based on a presentation that he gave on why the U.S. Virgin Islands should be the next host.
“The idea of bringing the conference to the Virgin Islands gives me a chance to interact with lieutenant governors while in my jurisdiction. For some of them it would be their first exposure to the Virgin Islands,” Mr. Potter said. “Networking with other lieutenant governors is very important. Bringing them to the Virgin Islands would be a major impetus in our networking with fellow lieutenant governors throughout the nation.”
The N.L.G.A. business meeting is held annually as the forum for lieutenant governors to discuss pertinent topics including the future direction of the organization, as well as its financial health. Membership consists of lieutenant governors from the 50 states and the U.S. territories.
Lieutenant governors throughout the country, their staff and family members are expected to be in attendance at the conference in St. Thomas next year.
Aside from his presentation on why the U.S.V.I. should host the upcoming conference, Mr. Potter was one of the lead members in a roundtable discussion on tourism brands and budgets, according to the release. Other topics discussed during the conference included “How Your State Works with Persons with Disability,” and “Changing the Special Education Culture.”
The topics were relative to issues currently taking place in the various lieutenant governors purview throughout the nation. There were lengthy discussions on exactly how each lieutenant governor, along with their respective governors, are working on the unique problems in their areas, according to the release.
