ST. CROIX — A Consortium-sponsored debate, which was scheduled for Oct. 22 at the Starlight Lounge here, has been canceled, the publication made known today.
The reason for the cancellation is because Governor Kenneth Mapp said today that he would not be able to make it to the event. The message was relayed through Lieutenant Governor Osbert Potter, who said, “We have a very serious conflict with something that we rescheduled three different times.” Mr. Potter also apologized for any inconveniences.
The publication had reached out to Government House about two weeks ago, after Kevin Jackson, employed in the PR department of the administration, said The Consortium should address the governor’s invite to him. The invite was sent to Mr. Jackson, as requested, a number of times, but he never returned a confirmation. And when phone call attempts were made, Mr. Jackson’s phone was disconnected. (Mr. Jackson had given the impression that it would not be a problem scheduling the governor to participate in the debate.)
The governor did offer to participate on Wednesday, but other candidates with prior commitments would probably not be able to attend, therefore The Consortium decided to cancel.
The publication apologized for any inconvenience the cancellation may have caused. Ernice Gilbert, VIC founder and publisher, did not offer comment.
