ST. THOMAS — Governor Kenneth Mapp will departed the territory on Sunday to meet with federal officials and congressional leaders in Washington, D.C. and to attend the National Governors Association’s Summer Meeting in Providence, Rhode Island, Government House has announced.
Included on Mr. Mapp’s schedule are appointments with U.S. Secretary of Interior Ryan Zinke and U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos — a meeting that Virgin Islands Education Commissioner Sharon McCollum and Office of Management & Budget Director Nellon Bowry will also attend, according to the release.
More than 30 governors are expected to convene in Rhode Island on July 14 for discussions on cybersecurity, federal-state collaboration, work force development, innovation and global trade. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is among those scheduled to speak at this year’s meeting.
According to Government House, in accordance with the Revised Organic Act of 1954, Finance Commissioner Valdamier Collens will serve as acting governor through July 13, the day Lt. Governor Osbert Potter returns to the territory from a meeting of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in Madison, Wisconsin.
Governor Mapp is scheduled to return July 17.
