Police Make Swift Arrest In Downtown Christiansted Shooting

Crime / News / Virgin Islands / November 30, 2016

ST. CROIX — A man who is suspected of shooting a male victim in downtown Christiansted on Tuesday morning in the vicinity of the Buy Smart Mini Mart (Bienvenidos) on Company Street, was arrested the same day, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte announced late Tuesday.

Approximately 12 hours following the incident, police arrested 32-year-old Omari Kalem Gordon and charged him with first-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault, according to Mr. Dratte. Yesterday’s shooting was not Mr. Gordon’s first run-in with the law; he was arrested on July 13, 2015 at 8:40 p.m. and charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm in the vicinity of Harbor View.

Unable to make bail of $500,000, Mr. Gordon was remanded to the Golden Grove Detention Center pending his advise-of-rights hearing.

Police Commissioner Delroy Richards said the arrest was a collaborative effort between the community and the V.I.P.D.

“Proactively, we will continue this momentum as we approach the holiday season, keeping our streets safe,” Mr. Richards said.

Police area asking anyone with knowledge that may lead to the arrest of individuals suspected of perpetrating criminal acts to contact 911, or Crime Stoppers USVI, where your tip could net you a payday.
