ST. CROIX — The Virgin Islands Police Department has released the names of the victims who were involved in a deadly vehicular accident near Plaza Extra East in the wee hours of Monday morning.
Anylia Fawkes, 19, was the driver of the vehicle and died on impact when the vehicle — a red, older model Suzuki Vitara traveling from east to west — veered off the Queen Mary Highway (Centerline Road), flipped multiple times and slammed into a pole in the Plaza Extra East parking lot (the road in the area is currently being paved, and there were many uneven spots as of early Monday). Ms. Fawkes’s friend, Christa Rice, also 19, was in critical condition at the Juan F. Luis Hospital as of Monday, and was said to be headed to the U.S. mainland for further treatment. Ms. Rice was also involved in an accident that took place at Plaza Extra West in December, where four people were rescued from a burning car — also a small SUV — by National Guard soldiers.
The victims had left a dance event early Monday when the incident occurred. The VI Fire Service received notification at about 4:16 a.m. Monday.
By the time a Consortium reporter made it to the scene, emergency response personnel were getting ready to place the totaled vehicle on a V.I.P.D. wrecker. There were also St. Croix Rescue personnel on the scene, as well as V.I.P.D. officers and VI Fire Service personnel.
The accident was the first vehicular death on St. Croix for 2017.
