Afternoon On The Green 2017: ‘A Centennial Celebration of Delicacies’

ST. THOMAS — The Herman E. Moore Golf Course at the University of the Virgin Islands will be abuzz with food, fun and fellowship on Sunday, March 19, 2017, as the community gathers for the 28thannual Afternoon on the Green, UVI announced Saturday. The theme for this year’s event, which will be open to the public from noon – 5 p.m. is “A Centennial Celebration of Delicacies.” All proceeds from Afternoon on the Green (AOTG) will support the Edward E. Thomas Volunteer Scholarship Awards.

“We are looking forward to hosting the absolute best event this year in commemoration of our 55th anniversary and the Centennial Celebration,” said Mitchell Neaves, vice president of Institutional Advancement. “Afternoon on the Green is the largest taste event in the territory which attracts over 3,500 people annually. We showcase food, entertainment and most of all our high quality academic programs.” He continued, “We look forward to welcoming the entire Virgin Islands community to our campus for a fun filled day.”

The Afternoon on the Green will feature food cooked by some of the best chefs on the island; live entertainment including Cool Sessions Brass, DJ Skelly, and the Macislyn Bamboula Dancers; family fun consisting of bounce houses, face painting, balloon animals and games; and friendly competition for the best food in a variety of categories.

Dishes provided by individuals or groups will be judged by the community via paper ballot or texting. Prizes will be given to the top three winners in each category: main dishes, seafood, vegetarian dishes, soups, side dishes, breads, pastries and sweets, and native drinks. The AOTG committee is particularly excited to introduce the new vegetarian dish category this year.

Grand prizes will be presented to the top overall vote recipients. Additionally, the first 150 cooks to volunteer dishes will receive an Afternoon on the Green t-shirt as well as a $10 gift certificate to Plaza Extra or Moe’s Fresh Market. The Buzz is also donating a trip for two to St. Croix. Other event sponsors are VI Council on the Arts, Thrive Chiropractic, West Indian Company Limited, Water and Power Authority, AT&T, First Bank, Coca-Cola, Caribbean Auto Group, St. Thomas Federal Credit Union, Pro Solar, MSI, Lew Henley’s, Crown Mountain Water, Merchants Commercial Bank and Dominos.

“The Afternoon on the Green celebration is a premier event that connects individuals with the University community,” said Kyza Callwood, MPA, CEA, co-chair of the Afternoon on the Green Committee (AOTG). “We are promoting a scholarship-driven fundraising initiative that captures UVI’s unique framework of excellence.”

As always, UVI will display its many degree programs, clubs and organizations under the academic tent. Faculty, staff and students from marine sciences, business and WUVI radio station will share their projects and activities with prospective students and the general public.
