Police Arrest Man Accused Of Raping And Assaulting Woman

ST. CROIX — V.I.P.D. officers in the wee hours of Saturday morning arrested a man who was accused of raping and assaulting a woman he was acquainted with, the force’s public information officer, Glen Dratte has announced.

Police arrested Steven E. Matta II, above, at 4:36 this morning on first-degree rape and assault charges.

According to police, residents of the neighborhood where Mr. Matta lives, heard loud screams of what sounded like a female voice coming from Mr. Matta’s home. The neighbors then called police at about 11:16 p.m. on Friday, to report the matter.

Contact was made with the victim, who told police that Mr. Matta had sexually assaulted her, punched her in the face and slammed her to the ground.

Mr. Matta was located by patrol officers and was immediately detained and arrested, according to Mr. Dratte.

Keeping in line with the territory’s domestic violence laws, no bail was granted to the suspect, and he was remanded to the Golden Grove Detention Center pending his advise-of-rights hearing.
