UVI Celebrates University Pride Throughout April

Education / News / Virgin Islands / April 17, 2017

The University of the Virgin Islands will celebrate University Pride throughout the month of April, the institution of higher learning announced this afternoon. UVI alumni, students, faculty and staff will showcase their Buccaneer spirit with events in the territory, on campus and online.

“This year the University is especially proud as we are celebrating the 55th Anniversary of UVI’s charter,” said Dr. Kevin Williams, vice provost of Access and Enrollment Services. “UVI Pride is our opportunity to showcase our love and appreciation we have for this great institution.”

Williams continued, “We want the Virgin Islands community to be aware of and support the jewel that UVI is right here in our own backyard. We invite you to come out to share and celebrate with us the pride we have for UVI because there can be no UVI without you.”

UVI Pride celebrations kicked off at the 2nd Annual UVI Village, which will be held on Thursday, April 13, in the Sports and Fitness Center front parking lot. The event opened with a Pride Parade from the east entrance to the campus to the Sports and Fitness Center. There was an opening ceremony at the Sports and Fitness Center parking lot. Entertainment was provided by Spectrum Band, The Venomous Poizon Band and a special guest DJ.

Throughout the month, students, administrators, and alumni are encouraged to wear the school colors, blue and white.  Meanwhile, the University invites members of its community to share memories and stories about UVI on social media, using the hashtag #UVIPRIDE.

UVI Pride is also a way to expose high school students on all three islands to academic and extracurricular programs at the University.  On St. Thomas, Pride celebrations will take place at Ivanna Eudora Kean High School on April 19, and the Charlotte Amalie High School on Thursday, April 20. On St. Croix, UVI Pride celebrations will be held at the St. Croix Educational Complex on Wednesday, April 19. and at St. Croix Central High on Thursday, April 20.
