ST. THOMAS — “The U.S. Virgin Islands has produced some of the best athletes in the world despite limited resources, our geographic location, and our small population. However, our young athletes are not supported nearly enough by the community they are asked to represent.”
Those were the words of Chantel Hoheb, assistant director of Island Vibe Summer Camp, a nonprofit whose aim is to offer world class indoor and beach volleyball training to Virgin Islands athletes. This year’s program, the nonprofit’s first, will be held at the University of the Virgin Islands from June 25-July 8.
“We’re bringing world class coaching to the U.S. Virgin Islands,” Ms. Hoheb says. The organization has partnered with Dr. Gylton DaMatta, one of the foremost volleyball experts in the world, having coached professional teams in over 8 countries.
Athletes ages 13-17 are invited to register for this intense two-week camp that will include room and board at UVI, Island Vibes Summer Camp gear, field trips, transportation, cultural activities and a community service project. Island Vibe Camp will also accept 10-12 year olds as day campers who will receive lunch.
In an effort to raise money for the upcoming program and to fund “camperships” that can help send athletes to camp, Island Vibes has launched a crowd funding CAMPaign on Indiegogo’s Generosity platform. The fundraiser, dubbed “Island Vibes 40 Day CAMPaign”, runs from April 10 to May 20, and will be aimed at people living all over the world — especially Virgin Islands disapora who want to help with the development of local talent and sports back home.
As of Tuesday, $1,000 had been raised by 14 donors. To help the nonprofit meet its goal of $10,000, go here. Various gifts will be awarded based on your donation level.
