ST. CROIX — A Wisconsin man vacationing on St. Croix with his family drowned near Hotel on the Cay after being swept away by a strong current while snorkeling on Tuesday, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte announced late Wednesday.
The victim, identified as 54–year-old Daniel Reardon of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was snorkeling with his family — all of whom were carried into the deep by the strong current — but Mr. Reardon did not make it back to shore, according to Mr. Dratte, citing information provided by the family, whose members were interviewed by emergency medical technicians.
Beachgoers in the area — some on jet skis and another with a boat — attempted to rescue the victim, who drowned on the east side of the ocean near the hotel, according to Mr. Dratte.
Mr. Reardon was transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
