Governor Kenneth Mapp has delivered on his promise of issuing some tax refund checks “just before carnival,” making known through a post on his Facebook page that the Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Department of Finance issued 1,954 refund checks this morning, which Mr. Mapp says equates to $5 million.
“I know we’re getting ready for carnival, I want to wish the people of the Virgin Islands a wonderful and happy carnival,” Mr. Mapp said during a press conference at Government House on St. Croix Wednesday. “And for the media… Alright, I’ll give out one: I think they’re going to see some tax refunds just before carnival.” A Consortium reporter had asked the governor about promised tax refunds, and when he believed the monies would be issued.
Today, in his Facebook post, the governor said his economic recovery plan includes the issuing of tax refunds to residents. “We’re not out of the financial woods yet, but our plan calls for paying income tax refunds. Thank you BIR and DOF, $5 million more 2015 income tax refunds paid!” Mr. Mapp wrote.
