Juan F. Luis Hospital Still Struggling With Drainage Issues

Health / News / Virgin Islands / May 4, 2017

ST. CROIX — Work to fix the drainage problems at the Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center continues today, the hospital made known through a press release issued late Wednesday. The hospital’s facilities team met on Tuesday with a cadre of engineers from the Waste Management Authority, the Department of Public Works and the Virgin Islands National Guard to assess the drainage issue and to develop and assist with the implementation of a short-term plan, according to the release.

J.F.L. gave no timeline as to when the problem would be rectified, and it did not say whether non-essential employees — who were given leave through Wednesday — were again on leave because of the situation.

The hospital revealed on Monday that its drainage system was damaged. It said some of the sewage drain lines on the first floor were compromised, and JFL’s administration was notified about the drainage system issue shortly after 12:00 p.m. Monday. The release added that the executive team worked aggressively to resolve the issue, and when it was determined that additional resources were necessary, hospital officials initiated a code yellow at 5:50 p.m. Monday.
