Memorial Day Being Commemorated With Events Territory-Wide

News / May 29, 2017

Memorial Day is being commemorated today with events throughout the territory, as Virgin Islanders, as well as the islands’ leaders, remember the brave men and women who died while serving in the armed forces.

Recognized on the last Monday of May every year, the holiday also marks the unofficial start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its unofficial end.

Below, a list of events happening in St. Thomas and St. Croix from 9:30 a.m. today (St. John’s event took place on Sunday). The Consortium will cover events on St. Croix.

St. Croix the procession will start at the Post Office in Fredericksted via police escort and proceed to the Frederiksted Cemetery for the graveside ceremony then on to the Frederiksted waterfront, adjacent to the Verne I. Richards Veterans Memorial Park, for the seaside service. The official commemoration ceremony will be held at the Verne I. Richards Veterans Memorial Park immediately after. Keynote Speaker will be Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Christopher M. Dubose, Army Instructor at St. Croix Central High School JROTC.

St. Thomas we will start with a graveside ceremony at the entrance of Western Ceremony #1. After the graveside ceremony the procession will start, via police escort, from the Western Cemetery and proceed to the Emil White bust on the waterfront for the seaside ceremony. After the seaside ceremony we will then proceed up the waterfront making a left turn before the ASFOUR Dept. Store toward mainstreet; making a right onto mainstreet and proceeding forward until we get to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Veterans Park. The official commemoration ceremony will be held immediately after at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Veterans Park. Keynote Speaker will be First Sergeant Monet Davis, First Sergeant of the Virgin Island’s 73rd Army National Guard Band.
