Man Shot To Death Near Watergut Shanty Following Verbal Altercation

ST. CROIX — A man was shot to death around the 7:00 p.m. hour on Saturday following a verbal altercation with another man, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte has announced.

The 911 emergency call center was notified of multiple shots being fired at the shanty about 7:03 p.m. Upon officers arrival, they discovered an unresponsive male victim with multiple gunshot wounds about his body.

The victim, identified as 36-year-old Gregory Barnes from Christiansted, was in a verbal altercation with another man, who then proceeded to shoot Mr. Barnes multiple times and fled the area, according to Mr. Dratte.  Mr. Dratte said that the suspect left the scene in a red Ford Explorer.

The victim was taken to the hospital by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m. by medical personnel, Mr. Dratte said. The body was identified by next of kin.
