Juan Luis Hospital Found To Be In Compliance CMS; Facility Continues To Address Drainage Problems

Breaking News / Health / Top Stories / Virgin Islands / July 20, 2017

ST. CROIX– Executives of the Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center (JFL) announced on Thursday that it received notice from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Wednesday morning, that the hospital was in “substantial compliance” with the Medicare Conditions of Participation for Hospitals in line with 42 CFR Part 482.

The notification comes as a result of a revisit survey conducted on April 20 by Healthcare Management Solutions, LLC on behalf of CMS. The April survey was a revisit to validate the plan of correction outlined in response to the November 2016 HVAC-related complaint survey. CMS representatives were able to see that the work has begun, and JFL continues to maintain a safe environment of care for its patients during the process, according to the hospital.

In the interim, JFL says its management team remains committed to providing a permanent long-term solution to address the drainage issue that is affecting the Emergency Department (ED). The ED transition team continues to work diligently on relocation to the Virgin Islands Cardiac Center (VICC), and the team continues to work on infrastructure updates to prepare for the transition. Once a date to move the ED has been established, the community will be notified, JFL said.

The hospital continues to provide emergency department services to the community in its existing location. The interim measures implemented to address the recent issue are working well, and the hospital remains vigilant in monitoring these interim measures to assure the continuity of emergency department operations, according to the JFL release.

Mr. Evangelista and the executive team expressed gratitude to the entire hospital staff for their hard work and ongoing dedication to ensuring that the environment of care for patients is the top priority. The hospital also thanked its facilities team for conducting regular inspections and continuous monitoring to ensure that the hospital maintains a safe environment of care for its patients, and that infection control remains a top priority.
