At an 11:00 a.m. press conference at Government House today, Governor Kenneth Mapp said Hurricane Maria’s projected impact on the territory, particularly St. Croix, had become more dire. Mr. Mapp urged everyone who could, to take shelter. Maria is expected to impact St. Croix from east to west with its strongest winds. The storm, as of 2:00 p.m., had sustained hurricane-force winds of 160 miles per hour, with stronger gusts. Hurricane-force winds extend out 35 miles, while tropical storm-force winds extend out 140 miles.
