Elections System Office On St. Croix Destroyed; St. Thomas-St. John Office In Operation

Community Center / News / Virgin Islands / October 7, 2017

The Sunny Isle Annex office of the Elections System of the Virgin Islands was destroyed by Hurricane Maria, announced Supervisor of Elections Caroline Fawkes on Friday.

“The St. Croix office located in the Sunny Isle Annex has been destroyed. The voting equipment however and other election equipment in the main storage room was not damaged. We are cleaning up, planning to place our equipment in storage while we look for office space in coordination with the Department of Property and Procurement,” Mrs. Fawkes said.

The St. Thomas-St. John District office survived both Hurricanes Irma and Maria, and therefore is open on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Due to no internet connectivity, voter registration cards cannot be obtained at this time, Mrs. Fawkes advised.

The Joint Board of Elections encouraged the community to be “patient, respectful and helpful,” Ms. Fawkes said, adding, “Most of us are resilient people, pray and support those who aren’t in our community. We will continue to adjust, adapt and accomplish together — VI Strong.”
