As the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority continues restoration work territory-wide, the utility is coming across damaged electrical meter bases and weather heads. If either of these are damaged, WAPA will not reinstall meters until repairs are made and certified by a licensed electrician. Home and business owners are advised to make repairs to their damaged weather heads and/or meter bases as soon as possible. Once crews have reached your neighborhood, those customers who have not had their weather head or meter base repaired, will not have service immediately restored.
Here’s the authority’s latest power and potable water restoration update.
ELECTRIC SYSTEM
- WAPA crews along with on-island and off-island contractors worked across the territory Thursday in support of the reconstruction and restoration efforts. With more than 510 off-island personnel expected in the Virgin Islands by next week Friday to augment the restoration of service, WAPA will be publishing an aggressive restoration schedule for both districts next week.
- On St. Thomas, crews continued the buildout of primary circuits from the most eastern entrance of Frenchtown to Cancryn Junior High School. Portions of that line are now energized. Work on primary circuits along Lindbergh Bay road continued toward Gladys Abraham Elementary School. Significant progress was made in developing a primary circuit from Fort Mylner to the Tutu Fire Station. These areas will be energized over the next few days. Crews will then work on the primary circuit along Weymouth Rhymer Highway to the Estate Donoe substation. Worked continued on First Avenue in Sugar Estate and some residential service in that area was restored.
- On St. John, off-island contractor BBC Electrical Services worked in sections of Cruz Bay and on both Feeders 7E and 9E. Portions of those areas are expected to be restored by late next week.
- On St. Croix, portions of Feeder 6A, up to Five Corners, were energized on Thursday. Crews planted additional poles on Feeder 1A to bring service to more customers in downtown Christiansted as well as to Hotel on the Cay. Additional poles were planted on Feeder 5A from Sunny Isle to Barren Spot as well as along Queen Mary Highway to Hannah’s Rest en route to Frederiksted town. Priority areas for restoration of service include the modular units being used at Luis Hospital and the fire station along with some government offices in the Sunny Isle area.
- On Friday, divers will be performing assessments of WAPA’s submarine cables to St. John, Hassel Island and Water Island, as preparations are made to restore electrical service to those areas.
POTABLE WATER SYSTEM
- There are four days of emergency water storage on St. John, nine days on St. Thomas and three days on St. Croix.
- On St. Thomas, over the next few days, crews are expected to restore the Contant pump station to resume potable water service to Estate Contant, the Contant Knolls housing community and surrounding areas.
- On St. John, repairs are pending at the Cruz Bay pump station. Until these repairs are completed, the town of Cruz Bay is being provided potable water service from St. Thomas.
- On St. Croix, water pressure continues to increase in Frederiksted and other west-end communities. On Friday, water crews will address service-related issues at the Herbert Gri gg Home and on the campuses of Educational Complex and Central High School.
