ST. THOMAS — Longtime News2 anchor Sandra Goomansingh, above, has been announced as the Mapp administration’s latest media spokesperson, while media veteran Angela Gordon was hired as the administration’s deputy communications director, according to a release Government House issued late Friday.
The administration has not had difficulty filling these critical positions, but it has struggled to keep its employees working for long periods. Since taking office, the administration has hired three communications directors — Kimberly Jones, who held the position for one year beginning at the start of 2015; Nicole Bollentini, who lasted only four months, although she is still employed in the communications department; and Cherie Munchez, who was relieved of her duties in March 2017. When Ms. Munchez was from removed from the position, Samuel Topp, who held the deputy communications director job, resigned not too long after. Communications with Government House has been sporadic since, with Samuel Carrion, whose original title in the administration was faith-based programs coordinator, serving temporarily as the administration’s spokesperson.
The latest hires come with a combined decades of experience in media. St. Thomas-born Goomansingh is a communications professional with extensive experience in broadcast journalism, having served as a news anchor for more than 17 years. Over the past five years, she served as WMNS (CBS) TV2’s News anchor and director. And Ms. Gordon is an Emmy Award winner, who grew up on St. Thomas and returned to the territory from the mainland in 2004, according to Government House. She holds a masters degree in mass communications and television production. She has experience working in radio and television productions, and joins Government House after working as a production manager at the WTJX-TV PBS station.
The administration said the media should direct all inquiries to the aforementioned two moving forward.
