ST. CROIX — In a release issued Friday, the Juan F. Luis Hospital said it remains committed to providing quality healthcare to Virgin Islanders, though the medical facility remains pressed with a number of issues and financial constraints. In the release, issued by the hospital’s newest public relations person, Nykole Tyson, J.F.L. said it is currently providing the following services: intensive care, labor and delivery, post-partum, nursery, neonatal intensive care, pediatrics, medical surgical services, endoscopy, radiology, acute hemodialysis (inpatient), out-patient dialysis, laboratory, radiology, acute behavioral health and emergency department services. The hospital said it expects to resume the interventional cardiac services in the near future.
The release sought to reassure residents that the hospital was capable of meeting most of there community’s needs. “J.F.L. is also committed to rebuilding and regrowth, the release said, adding, “Innovation in healthcare is at the forefront of our healthcare vision. Integration of new technologies into the work flow processes, developing strategic partnerships and utilizing state of the art equipment to comply with modern industry trends and standards are our primary goals. This will be done in phases.” The release did not give a timeline for the phased improvement.
As for the modular units, J.F.L. projected they would be installed and ready for use by summer 2019. Once ready, the modular units “will provide the same lines of healthcare services currently provided at J.F.L.,” according to the release.
The units were supposed to be installed by summer of 2018, now the hospital is projecting a summer 2019 completion — a full year’s delay. “We have experienced delays not related to J.F.L., inclusive of availability of construction resources and shipping delays,” the hospital said. “JFL understands the concerns and expectations of the community and assures the residents that we are making every effort to expedite the completion of this process.”
The hospital mentioned what it described as aggressive efforts in recruiting “highly qualified healthcare professional and administrative personnel,” to support the medical needs of the community. To that end, J.F.L. will hold a job fair on Friday, January 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Cardiac Center located at the hospital. J.F.L. said leadership of each hospital department will be on hand, and on-the-spot interviews will be performed.
