Dept. Of Education Says No Shooting Has Occurred On School Grounds; Denounces Rumors

Education / News / Virgin Islands / February 21, 2018

ST. CROIX — Rumors circulating the local web concerning a shooting at the St. Croix Educational Complex and/or the St. Croix Central High School, are just that — rumors — as there’s been no such occurrence, according to a statement the Department of Education issued Wednesday.

find the full statement below:

The Office of the Insular Superintendent, St. Croix District denounces a rumor circulating on social media and the online community referencing a school shooting at the St. Croix Educational Complex High School and/or the St. Croix Central High School.

There has not been a threat of a school shooting or an active shooter at any of the schools in the District. Furthermore, neither of the district’s high schools have been placed on lockdown in response to a threat of gun violence.

The department acknowledges and understands the fear plaguing the community in light of gun violence in schools on the mainland. School administrators are trained to respond to threats of that nature and will follow protocol if under an active threat.

District officials are encouraging parents to monitor their students’ social media activity and report any instance of the further circulation of false rumors intended to spread fear and panic throughout the school system and community.
