The Waste Management Authority (W.M.A.) said on Wednesday afternoon that it, along with the Virgin Islands Fire Service and W.M.A. contractors, were battling an active fire at the Anguilla landfill from Wednesday morning.
The fire resulted in the closure of the landfill for all of Wednesday, W.MA. said.
Waste Management said it would continue to provide updates regarding changes that may affect public health and the environment. Motorists were advised to avoid traveling along the Airport Road until further notice.
A Consortium reporter traveled on the airport road after 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, but it seemed as if the fire was already contained by the authority, as there was no visible plumes of smoke in the area.
Concerned persons or those with questions should contact W.M.A. at 340-513-4171.
