ST. CROIX — In a release issued late Thursday, the Waste Management Authority said the Anguilla Landfill fire that has been burning since Wednesday morning, continued into Thursday and has yet to be fully contained. W.M.A. said it’s working with the V.I. Fire Service and the authority’s own contractors to suppress the burn.
While the St. Croix Transfer Station remained open to solid waste haulers with household wastes, public bins and trash carts, W.M.A. said it would not be accepting construction and demolition waste, mixed, green nor bulky waste.
The Anguilla Landfill, W.M.A. said, remains closed until further notice.
Residents are asked to keep bulky waste at their residence. The public and haulers will be notified when the authority will resume the acceptance of all other waste, according to the release.
Waste Management recommended that residents with respiratory disorders/conditions shelter in place to minimize exposure to smoke as wind directions change. Motorists are advised to avoid traveling along Airport Road until further notice. The authority said it will continue to provide updates regarding changes that may affect public health and the environment.
