The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority late Saturday said that the Anguilla Landfill fire that had burned for days, was extinguished on Friday.
Landfill operations were expected to resume today, W.M.A. said. The authority advised haulers and the public that the St. Croix Transfer Station is open and will accept waste from households, public bins and trash carts.
“We will not be accepting construction and demolition waste, mixed, green nor bulky waste. Some construction and demolition waste, will be accepted, but must meet guidelines,” Waste Management said. (For specifications, contact Nadine Noorhasan, compliance management and environmental enforcement director at 340-712-4962 or through email at [email protected]. Public and haulers will be notified when the authority resumes the acceptance of all other waste, W.M.A. said.)
At the height of the burn, which began on Wednesday morning, W.M.A. recommended that residents with respiratory disorders/conditions shelter in place to minimize exposure to smoke as wind directions changed. The authority had also advised motorists to avoid traveling along Airport Road.
