ST. CROIX — Governor Kenneth Mapp has been recovering from a knee injury that he sustained in his left leg, Government House has confirmed to The Consortium, after the publication sought information concerning Mr. Mapp’s absence from the public, and a swirling rumor that he had broken a leg after falling.
The Government House statement, issued late Friday, did not reveal how the governor hurt his knee and when the incident occurred. However, it said Mr. Mapp would be back to work on Monday.
Mr. Mapp learned from his physician that he needed an outpatient procedure to repair a minor fracture of his upper tibia, Government House said. The procedure, performed on Wednesday, was successful and the governor’s doctor has cleared him to return to duties, the release added.
The governor’s absence from the spotlight has been notable. Aside from appearing briefly during the St. Patrick’s Day Parade near Government House in downtown Christiansted — shaking hands, as is custom — the territory’s leader has been mostly out of sight.
It was not too long ago that Mr. Mapp said he would resume his weekly hurricane-related press briefings, stating that there was still a lot of pertinent information he needed to share with the community. However, since hosting a joint press conference with Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai, the governor has either canceled or not called the press briefings.
In February, the governor was admitted to the Juan F. Luis Hospital after experiencing “severe pains in his abdomen.” Mr. Mapp’s schedule was cleared for about two weeks following his hospitalization.
At the time, Governmet House spokesperson Goomansingh said Mr. Mapp was instructed to primarily rest after being released from the hospital. “The governor underwent a number tests, treatment and was discharged on Thursday with a number of instructions from his physician, chief among them was to ‘get some rest,’” she wrote.
