ST. CROIX — A native of the Virgin Islands who relocated to Miami, Florida following hurricanes Irma and Maria, has signed a full baseball scholarship to Broward College. Augustus Martin, who was born and raised on the island of St. Croix, officially signed to the college on Thursday, April 5th, 2018.
Mr. Martin’s story is one of trial—but great triumph—where the young man once lost all hope in his own ability to succeed. Coming from a humble background, Mr. Martin says he’s been playing the game since he was five years old. He was initially introduced to the game by his father, who is employed at the D.C. Canegata Ball Park. Although he wanted to be on the field, Mr. Martin says he wasn’t able to actually play until he was five. He’s been playing since.
He’s faced some challenges in his teenage years, but says that the one constant in his life has been his love of baseball. As a freshman, Mr. Martin attended the St Croix Central High School, admitting that he was not one who enjoyed going to school. Eventually, he left Central to attend the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy and High School. While there, Mr. Martin was injured, and because of it he had to leave the academy to return to the V.I. For approximately four months, Mr. Martin was unable to play while he underwent therapy. He said his confidence was shattered as he faced bullying and the stigmas that came with being an athlete in the V.I.
After Hurricane Maria, Mr. Martin moved to Miami, where he attended the Miami Norland Senior High School. After his third game of the season, he was presented with the offer for a scholarship.
Of the opportunity, Mr. Martin says that he is happy about the experience and to do what he loves. “It’s nothing to me, it’s just like I know that once I put in the work this was going happen,” he said.
Mr. Martin will be starting Broward in the fall semester.
