Senate President Myron Jackson is inviting Virgin Islanders to observe July 22 as a day of remembrance of the devastation and human suffering caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria, and as supplication for protection during this hurricane season in accord with Resolution No. 1845, which was passed by the 32nd Legislature last month.
According to a release from Mr. Jackson’s office, Hurricane Supplication Day was one of the oldest holidays in the Virgin Islands, dating back to the early 20th century. In the past, Virgin Islanders gathered in churches for special services and asked for the territory to be spared from the wrath of natural disasters and the devastation that came along with it, according to the release.
“Hurricane Supplication Day has been a fragment of our history for many years,” Mr. Jackson said. “This coming Sunday, Virgin Islanders will have the opportunity to reflect upon our resilience, be thankful for our blessings, and pray for our continued safekeeping against all forms of natural disasters.”
The release added that prayer has been a source of guidance, strength, and wisdom since the beginning of the territory’s history. It has sustained and given residents the strength to endure the sacrifices and suffering especially during the turbulent times of post Hurricanes Irma and Maria, he said.
“We are a territory of many different faiths and belief systems, and many share a profound conviction that prayer has been a source of fulfillment during all times of need,” Mr. Jackson said. “Let us continue to thank God for our many blessings and ask for continued guidance and strength.”
