ST. THOMAS — Governor Kenneth Mapp will be joined by President Bill Clinton, Bloomberg LP Co-Founder Tom Secunda, and representatives from Expedia to make several announcements related to recovery and sustainability in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Government House has announced.
The event takes place 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Family Resource Center at 2317 Commandant Gade (Bunker Hill) on St. Thomas. Government House did not divulge details, however the Clinton Foundation has been in the territory since 2017 after Hurricanes Irma and Maria ravaged the islands. And in February Mr. Clinton toured some areas in St. Thomas damaged by the storms, including My Brother’s Workshop and the Schneider Regional Medical Center on St. Thomas, and met with local leaders on St. John.
The former president agreed that hardening the territory’s infrastructure would save both tax dollars and lives. “The taxpayers will save money, but it’s also the morally right thing to do,” said the former president during a meeting with territorial leaders in February.
Mr. Clinton, who was visiting the Caribbean on behalf of the Clinton Foundation, explained that he had learned rebuilding lessons with the Foundation’s work after Hurricane Katrina. The homes they helped rebuild in New Orleans were better-built and were much more energy efficient, he said.
Another firm whose footprint has not been hard to notice in the territory’s recovery is the Bloomberg Foundation, which has been working closely with the governor in a number of areas relative to the territory’s recovery.
And as for Expedia, it is expected that the firm’s participation in Friday’s press conference will involve travel announcements, as the $15 billion company’s business model is primarily based around its travel fare aggregating sites, to include Expedia.com, Hotels.com and Hotwire.com
