A weather system The Consortium has been monitoring continues to form in the Atlantic Ocean, and the National Hurricane Center (N.H.C.) says the system is expected to strengthen into a tropical depression in the coming days.
According to N.H.C., the system, a broad area of low pressure, is centered a few miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. Shower and thunderstorm activity associated with this low has changed little in organization over the past few hours and recent satellite data indicate that a well-defined center has not yet formed. However, environmental conditions still appear to be conducive for development and a tropical depression is expected to form within the next few days while the system moves toward the west or west-northwest across the tropical Atlantic Ocean, according to N.H.C.
The Consortium is monitoring the system and reporting on it because its trajectory potentially places many of the Caribbean islands, including the territory, in its path, seen here. The storm is moving west west-northwest.
Chances of formation through the next 48 hours is high at 70 percent; chances grow to 90 percent through the next five days, according to N.H.C.
Also on the move is a tropical wave that is forecast to move off the west coast of Africa on Friday. Some development of this system is anticipated after that time, according to N.H.C., and a tropical depression could form over the weekend or early next week while the wave moves westward over the far eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean.
Formation chance through 48 hours is low at 0 percent, while formation chance through the next five days grows to medium at 50 percent, according to N.H.C.
